Indications and Usage
Treatment of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis, such as rhinorrhea, sneezing, and nasal pruritus (nasal spray); treatment of symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis, such as rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, and postnasal drip ( Astelin only); treatment of symptoms of perennial allergic rhinitis ( Astepro only); treatment of itching of eye associated with allergic conjunctivitis (ophthalmic).
Mechanism of action:
Azelastine competes with histamine for the H1-receptor sites on effector cells and acts as an antagonist by inhibiting the release of histamine and other mediators involved in the allergic response.
Side effects:
- Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
- Stop using azelastine and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
- bronchospasm (shortness of breath, tightness in chest, wheezing); or
- fast or uneven heartbeats.
Less serious side effects may include:
- a bitter taste in your mouth;
- headache;
- drowsiness or dizziness;
